Tornado hits Woodward

WOODWARD — A massive tornado hit the west part of Woodward.

There are reports of 4 fatalities from the storm, 2 people southwest of Woodward near the Tangier Blacktop area, and 2 children in the Hideaway Trailer Park. A medical examiner has been contacted. Report came from incident command area at 35th and Oklahoma.

Some damage reported along 34th Street area, including houses and some cars.

There were also other injuries in the Hideaway Trailer Park.

Several people have gone to Woodward Regional Hospital to receive treatment for injuries, according to reports from people at the hospital.

One witness, Christine Kirbie, who works for the Woodward News, was at 1910 Meadowlake when the storm hit. The house at 1910 Meadowlake was damaged but the house across the street "was gone." She also said a tree in the front yard at 1910 Meadowlake was torn away leaving only the roots in the yard.

Storm caught the edge of the house at 1910 Meadowlake, power lines are down.

Also, a carpet store on 34th Street by the movie theatre was destroyed.

Additional damage is also reported at 60th and Hanks Trail west of City limits and in Tangier blacktop area west of town near the airport. Some reports are as much as an 8 mile damage field starting west of Woodward and into the residential areas around 34th Street.

Officials are sending uninjured people from the storm area to the Woodward County Fairgrounds in the Crystal Beach Park area on the east side of town, according to scanner traffic. Injuries are being sent to staging area at 35th and Oklahoma - Hutch's Truck Stop area.

Red Cross is in the process of opening a shelter at the fairgrounds.

Main area for staging is 35th and Oklahoma. Request is for non-emergency traffic to avoid the area if possible.

Power is out on the west side of Woodward and the request is for traffic to avoid the area if at all possible. Traffic lights are also out at this time. Emergency traffic can be heard throughout the west side of community.

Report is there may also be a gas leak around the trailer park area.

Report of a vehicle rolled over at Mutual of Omaha on Oklahoma Avenue. Report of at least one person taken to hospital.

Requests for assistance from area fire units are going out now.

Tornado has cleared Woodward and is going north.

Also report of damaged home on Tangier Road Southwest of Woodward.
