NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma Norman campus is closing early this afternoon.
“Because of the expected winter storm, the OU Norman campus will close today, Monday, at 1:30 p.m.,” President David Boren said. “Please consult the university website for weather updates. The OU-Baylor women’s basketball game will likely be played tonight. Please consult soonersports.com for the latest information.”
Cleveland Area Rapid Transit will move to Alternative Schedule at 3 p.m. Since some routes are primarily used by OU students, some CART routes are affected by alternate schedule and no service, specifically Lindsey East, Lindsey West, Campus Loop and Lloyd Noble Center Shuttle.
“Tune into local television stations, visit CART on Facebook or at CARTNorman on Twitter for service changes. CART will continue service as long as conditions are safe,” CART advises.
Norman has canceled tonight’s Community Planning and Transportation Committee.
Storm conditions in northwest Oklahoma are more severe than in Norman at this time.
“Due to blizzard conditions, all highways in the northwestern Oklahoma counties of Ellis, Harper, Woodward, Beaver, Texas and Cimarron are closed until further notice," the Oklahoma Department of Transportation announced in a mid-morning Traffic Advisory.
Crews will resume clearing those roadways when blizzard conditions subside. Crews in Woods, Alfalfa and Major counties are treating roads and plowing as needed.
In western Oklahoma, Dewey, Blaine and Roger Mills counties report slick and hazardous roadways, ODOT said. Drivers are encouraged to “check weather conditions before heading out and to allow extra time getting to a destination should travel be necessary.”
“There are 550 trucks available statewide, 60 in the Oklahoma City metro area, all of which are ready and prepared for the next round of storms,” ODOT stated. “Sand and salt sheds are stocked and crews are ready to respond to conditions.”
