On Jan. 5, Landry Jones’ era as Oklahoma’s quarterback officially will end. The process to nail his replacement will begin.
Last week’s practices were the first steps. The emphasis in those workouts were for the non-starters.
Blake Bell, Drew Allen, Kendal Thompson and Trevor Knight, who has been the Sooners’ scout team quarterback all season, received the brunt of the work.
“I’ve really noticed it because they’ve gotten a lot more snaps here in the last three days. They’re doing well. I’m excited about the way they’re all progressing,” OU coach Bob Stoops said last week.” Blake and Drew throw the ball really well. Blake throws a great long ball. I know we haven’t seen it as much, but he has an excellent arm to go along with all the other stuff.
The other young guys are coming. Kendal has done some good things the last couple days. Trevor Knight has been exceptional on our scout team and is doing well.
“You know how it is: they have to get in there when it really matters and perform. We’ll see, but there’s potential there.”
Stoops might have liked what he saw, but he isn’t in a hurry to put out a depth chart.
“I don’t care when we name it,” he said. “We’ve done this for a lot of years and we feel hurried to do it. We like them to compete.”
