Man pleads guilty in death of Norman parole officer

The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A Midwest City man has been sentenced to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to the fatal shooting of a parole officer.

Lester Kinchion pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder in the May 18 shooting death of 32-year-old Jeffery McCoy of Norman. McCoy was shot to death with his own gun as he arrived at a Midwest City home to meet with a parolee.

Authorities say Kinchion wasn’t the subject of McCoy’s meeting.

Kinchion’s attorney, Cathy Hammarsten, says her client has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is being treated with medication. Kinchion apologized to McCoy’s family at the hearing Thursday.

The Oklahoman reports that prosecutors agreed to waive the death penalty as part of the deal.
