Oklahoma’s meeting with Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl will mark the Sooners’ first appearance in the game since Jan. 1, 2002.
OU beat Arkansas, 10-3, in a game that epitomized a defensive struggle. There were only 17 first downs in the game. Arkansas had more penalty yards (54) than total offensive yards (50).
The biggest factor in the game, however, was the weather. The game was played at 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day, and temperatures struggled to make it above freezing.
OU defensive coordinator Mike Stoops doesn’t remember much about the game other than freezing on the sidelines.
“I remember it was freezing cold. It was about zero degrees. We played Arkansas and won 10-3,” he said. “I remember it was an early wake-up on New Year’s Day. This will be a little different.”
Playing at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, removes the cold weather aspect because it is a domed stadium. The Sooners also will practice there.
