Sooners win diamond opener

NORMAN — The dominant pitching Oklahoma expected to have was apparent in its 10-4 season-opening victory over Hofstra on Friday.

Sooner starting pitcher Dillon Overton gave up just two hits and struck out seven over 7 innings to get the victory. The junior left-hander threw only 84 pitches.

The unexpected aspect was the clutch hitting that fueled the rout. Catcher Anthony Hermelyn drilled a three-run double in the bottom of the first inning and designated hitter Matt Oberste added a bases-loaded triple in the fourth as part of a 10-hit day for the Sooners.

They needed the pitching and hitting. The Sooners committed four errors.

Joseph Burg took the loss for Hofstra. He allowed six runs on seven hits over four innings.

The victory was the 21st straight in season-opening games in Norman.
