NORMAN — Oklahoma’s lineup just got even more dangerous.

The Sooners announced the addition of sophomore infielder Shelby Pendley to the softball roster on Thursday. The transfer from Arizona hit 19 home runs for the Wildcats last year and was named to the All Pac-12 first team.

Despite her success at Arizona, Pendley said it wasn’t “the right fit” and she wanted to make a change. That led her to OU, where coach Patty Gasso recruited her out of high school.

“This was my second choice on my list of schools to go to, but I never got a chance to visit,” Pendley said. “It’s a new start and I’m just really looking forward to it.”

At OU Pendley will join a lineup that set school and conference records with 102 home runs last season and ranked second nationally with 1.59 home runs per game.

“We’re very pleased about the addition,” Gasso said. “Shelby is very athletic and versatile, so she helps solidify our infield at any position. She also has incredible strength at the plate.”

Gasso said the first challenge for Pendley is to learn the system, something she expects the sophomore to excel at.

“The challenge for Shelby now is to learn our system and learn it quickly, which I don’t think she’ll have any problem with. She’s so hungry to learn, and you can feel that. She’s a sponge and she wants to learn, wants to know and wants to be taught.”

The Sooners start the season on Feb. 8 at the Kajikawa Classic in Phoenix, Ariz.
