NORMAN — A man and a child died in an early-morning house fire on Norman’s southeast side today, officials said.

Deputy Fire Chief Jim Bailey said firefighters were called to 2605 Richardson Drive about 3:30 a.m. today. They entered the burning garage and found a girl approximately two years old in the living room of the single-story home.

The child was taken by EMSSTAT to Norman Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead. A man in his 20s was found dead under fire debris in the garage. Both of the victims’ bodies have been taken to the state Medical Examiner’s office for cause of death and identification.

Bailey said investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire. It took about 20 firefighters 40 minutes to contain the fire. Preliminary damage estimate to the home and its contents is $135,000.
