Gun report prompts closure of Bartlesville schools

BARTLESVILLE (AP) — Officials canceled classes Wednesday in a northeast Oklahoma city after a resident reported seeing two men near the high school, one of whom was carrying a gun.

Bartlesville Public Schools notified parents late Tuesday of the closure affecting all schools in the district. Superintendent Gary Quinn says the schools will reopen after the holiday break.

Last week, 18-year-old Bartlesville student Sammie Chavez was charged with plotting to shoot classmates and detonate bombs at the school. Chavez, who was arrested the same day as the deadly Connecticut school shooting, remains jailed on $1 million bond.

Bartlesville Police Capt. Jay Hastings says police are trying to locate the two men and determine why they were carrying a gun on school property.

Bartlesville is about 50 miles north of Tulsa.
