Our picks: Haralson, Tinsley and Williams

Primary vote Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

NORMAN — Tinsley, Haralson, Williams

our choices in local races

A couple of the statewide races in Tuesday’s primary election have generated some excitement. Contests for the unexpired U.S. Senate term, Corporation Commission and Superintendent of Schools posts have engaged and enraged voters.

However, some local races have also ginned up the partisan enthusiasm that the primaries are intended to provide.

In the only non-partisan race on the ballot, we believe both candidates are well qualified to serve. However, we give the edge to Clint Williams as the best choice to replace longtime Norman City Council Member Tom Kovach. Williams has shown the ability to build compromises among various constituencies, a skill that will be needed on an often divided council.

For County Commission District 3, three of the four candidates would be good for the county. We  believe Dr. Harold Haralson is the most qualified of the four Republicans running to replace Rusty Sullivan. His service as Norman’s mayor, work in the hospital emergency room and his Noble medical clinic have given him a good grasp of the district which includes parts of Norman and Noble. The district was redrawn after the last Census and now takes in a large part of northwest Cleveland County. The winner of the primary will face former state Sen. Cal Hobson, of Lexington, the lone Democrat to file for the office.

For County Assessor, we favor incumbent David Tinsley. He has worked in the office for more than 30 years and succeeded Denise Heavner in 2010. He has a reputation for fairness, honesty and compliance with the laws regarding property taxes. He has pledged continuous transparency in property valuations. No Democrat filed for the post so Tuesday’s vote will decide the winner.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.  Runoffs, if necessary, will be Aug. 26. The General Election will be Nov. 4.
