NORMAN — If you frequent 7-Elevens in the metro area, you may notice something new at some of the locations.
PaceButler Corporation has recently rolled out a program across the Oklahoma City metro area, including locations in Norman and Moore, where people can take their old cell phones and get cash for them.
There are nine drop boxes set up in Norman alone and about 100 drop boxes across the metro, Pacebutler CEO Tom Pace said.
“We wanted to make it so easy that you just take it to 7-Eleven and boom, you just make some cash,” Pace said.
The process is easy and convenient, he said. The company picks up the phones every day, Monday through Friday. The phones are then tested and audited and then they will send you a check in two to three days, he said.
A price list is posted up at the drop box near the plastic bag available to put your phone in. Pace said you can look up the model of the phone in the packet to find out how much you will get for it, or call the number on the packet.
“We’re currently paying up to $300 (for some phones),” he said, adding that all phones are at least worth 50 cents. The list is updated weekly.
The price is also guaranteed. Pace said if you do not like the price they offer for your phone, they will send your phone back to you.
Also, for every phone they buy, the company will also donate an educational book.
Pace said the books go to schools, churches, shelters, jails and prisons across the country. So far the company has given about 550,000 books. Pace said his goal now is to give away 50,000 books per month.
“Everybody has cell phones,” Pace said. “We just found a way to take old cell phones that are no use to anybody, give people cash for them and sell them around the world.”
Pacebutler Corporation started in 1987 as a used computer business but in 2001 started dealing strictly with cell phones.
“We’re one of the largest buyers of used cell phones nationwide,” Pace said. “Our sole purpose is to buy used cell phones here in the U.S. and export them throughout the world.”
