OKLAHOMA CITY —  KOCO-TV 5 has announced the promotion of Damon Lane of Moore to chief meteorologist.

Viewers already have gotten to know Lane as weekday morning meteorologist, according to a news release from the station.

Before joining KOCO-TV 5 in 2009, Lane served as chief meteorologist at KTXS-TV in Abilene, Texas. While forecasting and covering severe weather in north Texas, he was named “Abilene’s Favorite Meteorologist” three years in a row.

“Working as Chief Meteorologist in an area where accurate forecasts can save lives is more than a calling — it’s my life’s dream,” Lane said in the release. “It takes passion, energy and a commitment to staying at the forefront of the latest lifesaving weather technology.”

“Damon is one of the most passionate and viewer-centric meteorologists I’ve ever known,” Brent Hensley, KOCO-TV 5 president and general manager, said in the station’s release. “I always walk away from a conversation with him over storm coverage feeling we are safer for his being in his position. He is a perfect choice for chief meteorologist.”

Lane was born and raised in northern Virginia and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in communication/mass media from Old Dominion University, and a second Bachelor of Science degree in atmospheric sciences/meteorology at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

He is the only chief meteorologist in Oklahoma City to hold the CBM seal from the American Meteorological Society, the highest level certification for broadcast meteorologists from their top professional association, according to the station.

“Damon’s already shown us he has the knowledge, passion and dedication to lead our severe weather forecasting in the country’s most dynamic weather region,” news director Stephanie Croswait said in the station’s release. “Our viewers are in good hands.”

Lane’s passion for forecasting and experiencing weather first hand runs through both his professional and personal life. During his free time, Lane shares his love of the great outdoors with his wife Melissa and dog Skylar.

A lifelong outdoorsman, he especially enjoys hiking and skiing. “From exploring Oklahoma’s Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, to hiking and skiing in Colorado and Wyoming, I enjoy getting out in all four seasons,” he said. “One day I even hope to climb the world’s tallest peak, Mount Everest.”

Lane and his wife make their home in Moore.
