NORMAN — Using a smartphone, smart customers in Downtown Norman and Campus Corner areas can use the city’s new smart meters without a penny in their pockets. For those of us who need to read Technology for Dummies, what this translates into is more payola, more parking and more satisfied patrons for two favorite hotspots in core Norman.
One solution does not fit both areas.
Downtown has a dedicated parking lot on Gray Street between Peters and Crawford avenues. Multi-space parking meters were installed in that lot, and a minimal charge of 25 cents per hour with the first hour free was implemented.
In addition, the lot size was increased and now accommodates 144 parking spaces, with six spaces reserved for drivers with disabilities. Customers using ADA spaces can park free for the entire day in the downtown lot.
Campus Corner expects to get new single-space smart meters at 159 spaces throughout the area. While the cost is still being debated, it is anticipated that the first 30 minutes of parking will be free, with the charge running $1 to $2 an hour with a two-hour limit on parking.
