NORMAN — Meat and dairy goats make up a growing livestock market in Cleveland County and across the U.S. Oklahoma is currently the nation’s fourth-largest meat goat producer, with around 91,000 animals, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics.
However, historic levels of drought in recent years have played a significant role in reducing the number of all livestock, including meat goats in Oklahoma, from its high of around 115,000 animals in 2008.
While there are many sources of information about raising goats in print, the latest research-based information about goat production has gone digital, thanks to a new website provided through Oklahoma State University’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. “We wanted to make it as easy as possible for producers to have access to up-to-date information, by which they can make the best possible operational decisions,” said JJ Jones, OSU Extension area agricultural economics specialist.
The website includes the Oklahoma Basic Meat Goat Manual, educational videos and information related to the Oklahoma Meat Goat Boot Camp. The website contains information about the boot camp and how to attend.
“We’ve also created a meat goat Facebook page,” Jones said. “It’s yet another easy way for producers to find out the latest information about OSU Extension programs, presentations and marketing aspects relative to raising meat goats, facebook.com/OSUMeatGoat.”
To learn more about goats, Oklahoma State University Extension will host the Central Oklahoma Goat Workshop from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 27 in the OSU Extension Classroom at 601 E. Robinson St. in Norman and will include the following programs:
