NORMAN — What a great day April 2 was for everyone in Norman. First, we had a much-needed soaking rain and then we saw returns that indicated the voters value enhancements that will pave the way for improved quality of life for Normanites through economic development that tourism provides.
This was not just great news for the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Norman Arts Council and the Norman Parks and Recreation Department but for everyone in our city because we all benefit.
More money for tourism promotion through the NCVB means more people coming to Norman and spending money that builds our sales tax base. Additional revenue into the tax base means more money for the city to pay for municipal services like law enforcement, fire fighters and street maintenance.
For the Norman Arts Council to have more funds to grant, it will mean more programs for Norman and possibly new events attracting visitors to our city.
Throughout the past couple of decades, the Medieval Fair, Jazz in June, the May Fair Arts Festival and Midsummers Night’s Fair have brought visitors to Norman to experience our artistic culture. In its five years, the Norman Music Festival has added to that legacy of bringing visitors to Norman to experience the arts. Imagine new arts events bringing new visitors to Norman, too.
The additional money for the Norman Parks and Recreation Department will be able to pay for enhancements across the city to facilities that can host tournaments and bring visitors to Norman.
Updating the facilities at Griffin Park and Reaves Park along with Westwood could attract tournaments that will bring tax dollars to Norman, for example.
We want to thank everyone who has helped rally support for the measure including the Norman Chamber, the local Rotary Clubs, the Norman Downtowners, the Kiwanis Club and everyone else who spread the word throughout our community.
