NORMAN — Mary Gardner, Dollar General district manager in Moore, was recently named as part of Fortune magazine’s “Heroes of the 500” in 2014 for her work following the devastating tornadoes that hit the area in May 2013.
Mary helped hold the community together in the wake of the devastating tornadoes that ravaged the area last May. One of her employees has a son who was critically injured in the tornado. Mary worked tirelessly with co-workers to raise more than $5,000 to help the family with medical expenses.
Mary’s team also took turns bringing the family meals and helped them with upgrades to the home to make it accessible for their injured son. She also organized a “Christmas in July“ event, which brought in more than 300 new bikes, along with a truck load of toys, to replace the toys local children lost in the storms. Mary has also organized several other community fundraisers and events to help many families rebuild after the storm.
