NORMAN — The business officially opened their doors on June 4, 2009, when Aber LaValley, owner, was just 18 years old. With less than 20 paying students, LaValley started Vision Martial Arts Academy with just her mom, Lynne, helping with the administrative side of the business. LaValley envisioned creating a family friendly Taekwondo school where the young and old alike could train.
By basing the curriculum around life skills, such as focus, discipline and integrity, she assured that every student left class with an education that included much more than just kicking and punching. LaValley continues to receive comments from parents regarding how improved their children have become at school.
LaValley credits much of her success to the referrals of current students as well as community involvement. The instructors at Vision Martial Arts Academy teach free Verbal Self-Defense, Life Skill Development, and Abduction Awareness courses at several public schools in Norman, as well as to any group or organization upon request.
LaValley has personally taught P.O.W.E.R., an extremely effective self-defense workshop, to several hundred women in Norman and surrounding areas free of charge. “One of my aspirations with Vision has been to give back to Norman. It’s a fantastic feeling to view the past 5 years and think about all of the kids, and even adults, that we have touched positively in some way,” LaValley said.
To commemorate the occasion, Vision Martial Arts Academy is hosting a 5-year Anniversary Bash at their new location from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. They will be hosting free classes throughout the day, performances from their demo team, giveaways and much more at Robinson Crossing Shopping Center next to the old Dollar Theater.
