New events offer unique promotional opportunities for Norman

NORMAN — Promoting Norman as a great place to make a trip (business or leisure) is an every day occurrence at the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau. However, having something new, unique and shiny to promote to a new audience makes some of those days even more fun.

Reaching out to the national media about the Notre Dame-Oklahoma football game last October was an extra-special time because there was coast-to-coast interest in the Irish’s visit to Norman.

Even bigger than that has been the chance to help promote Norman to the people who attended the Tornado Relief Concert at Owen Field yesterday.

Before tickets went on sale and sold out on June 14, a member of the Tulsa media touched base with our office to collaborate on coverage for a very rare Garth Brooks (who lives in the Tulsa area) performance and the first in the state in at least a decade.

The journalist wanted to build a story based on what Norman newbies could do while in our city for the eight-hour concert.

With input from the NCVB, the writer built an itinerary of things to do before and after the concert which featured many other performers than just Keith. NCVB also outlined how to easily make a hotel reservation through VisitNorman.com.

There’s plenty to promote in Norman. We suggested a stop at Classic 50s or Eskimo Sno to get a slush or snow cone to cool off along with shopping at Campus Corner and Downtown Norman, both of which are within walking distance of Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. We also named many of local eateries as places for breakfast or brunch, unique to Norman, like The Diner and Syrup. We listed many of the great quick lunch spots for a burger or sandwich like The Garage or Bison Witches as well as a great cocktail and appetizer at The Mont or a boot-shaped beer glass at Das Boot Camp along with a great place for a multi-course sit-down dinner like Legends, all of which are a very short drive or longer walk from the festivities.

That collaboration was just one of the media opportunities the star-studded concert provided the NCVB to promote Norman to a new and different audience.
