Souvenir magnets reflect Norman’s magnetic appeal

NORMAN — Just in time for yesterday’s annual Downtown Main Street Christmas Parade, the Norman Convention and Visitors has a new cache of magnets ready to distribute.

Directly from the “it-is-what-it-is” department, the gismos feature Norman’s magnet events that typically bring in the most out-of-town visitors to our city. We list the Chocolate Festival, Mardi Gras Parade, Medieval Fair, Norman Music Festival, May Fair Arts Festival, Jazz in June, Midsummer’s Night Fair, Cleveland County Free Fair, National Weather Festival and the Christmas Parade.

Attendees of the Norman Chamber’s 35 South luncheon, people who commute from Norman and work in Oklahoma City, were the first recipients of the 2013 magnets. We are hoping that they took the magnets back to their offices and put them on the office refrigerator or filing cabinets so their colleagues not living in Norman can come to our city and contribute to our sales tax receipts and raise our tax base.

The CVB hands out these magnets at many of these events, out-of-town travel shows, trade shows, conventions, conferences, in media kits and every other opportunity where we can entice travelers to Norman.

We handed out thousands of magnets early in the first few months of 2012. Then in June, July and August, our hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts experienced the highest occupancy rates since 2007. Among all of the other outreach activities in which we engage, the magnets are part of our overall strategy to put heads in beds, generate more sales tax receipts and otherwise use tourism as an economic development tool.
