NORMAN — Back in the 1970s, Reese’s Peanut Butter cups had a memorable string of commercials that featured someone carrying chocolate and someone with a jar of peanut butter who collided. One would say, “You put chocolate in my peanut butter!” while the other one was saying, “Your peanut butter is on my chocolate!” Then each person would try the new combination and exclaim it was the best mix ever. Maybe I recall this ad campaign because peanut butter cups are in my Top 10 guilty pleasures list, or maybe because it was always fun to see the new situations that would create the taste combination.

The Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau and the University of Oklahoma has embarked on an intentional collision course this month as we are co-producing a visitors guide that will have two front covers and feature the most outstanding aspects of Norman and the University of Oklahoma for an audience of visitors.

Two front covers you ask? Yes! The two covers will flip. The 64-page guide will include 18 pages produced by the University of Oklahoma and the other 46 pages will be designed by the CVB.

This unique collaboration will mean that prospective students and their families will have a guide when they visit the campus that will explain the history and enhance a tour of the university. These guides will be available for campus visitors but will also be distributed through other prospective student service programs which include satellite offices in Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Denver, Kansas City and San Diego.

The Norman portion of the guide presents information about all the things a visitor can do in our city from shopping, dining and listening to live music to entertainment options including museums, athletic endeavors and family favorites.

We regularly distribute 100,000 guides annually to all corners of the U.S. at travel shows; inside welcome bags to conferences, meetings, conventions and sporting events taking place in Norman; upon request from and visitors and magazine readers; at fairs, festivals and other city events; during orientation activities at OU and more.

It might be difficult for this combination guide to be more popular than Reese’s Peanut Butter cups, but we think have a recipe for success that will benefit both the CVB and OU.
