The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — The debut of a new iPhone product and an operating system update was hot news in the media and social media trending and mentions.

That kind of top-of-mind awareness of all things mobile got us to thinking about’s analytics and just how staggering those numbers are.

Why do those numbers matter in the first place?

New Media Trend Watch reported earlier this summer that nearly two-thirds of U.S. Internet users will research travel via digital channels this year, according to eMarketer.

In August alone, the number of visits tripled from August 2012; from the August 2011 figures to August 2013, the number of visits increased by more than 700 percent. That means more people have been landing on our home page, which includes tabs to book a hotel room, check out the list of attractions, submit a request for proposal in the meeting professionals section or plan a shopping and dining trip.

Another staggering statistic is that among the analytics from this August, 42 percent of the total visits originated on a mobile device.

According to eMarketer, 50 million U.S. consumers will research travel on their smartphones and tablets, accounting for approximately 40 percent of all digital travel researchers. Among the total visitors, 27 percent are using an iOS, and 15 percent are accessing the site via the Android platform.

As part a package the CVB purchased with Sooner Sports Properties, those who download the Sooner Game Day app (available on both the iOS and Android platform) will see banner ads for VisitNorman, clickable to our home page, and access the traffic page on via a link that should bring even more mobile users to the site.

Stefanie Brickman, CTA, is the interim executive director of the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau. The vision of the Norman Convention & Visitors Bureau is to be the leader who markets Norman as the preferred destination in Oklahoma.
