Relatively cheap gas brings mini-vans back to the highways

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. -- Heavy interstate traffic en route to a state park here confirms what many in the travel industry have been saying for months: The family car vacation is back.
Relatively cheap gasoline this vacation season is bringing mini-vans back on the blacktop.

  • City needs to decide about impervious surfaces
Speaking as a denizen of Core Norman, I think the City Council needs to get its act together about impervious surfaces, specifically paved driveways and parking areas around our homes. Are they a Good Thing that should be required or a threat to the watershed that should be discouraged? Well-meaning Norman residents need to know.

  • Friends, businesses join to help disabled Norman veteran
A senseless shooting of a young Norman airman seven years ago showed the worst of humanity. An Indiana woman's re-connecting with the young man whom she knew in high school has brought out the best and rallied a community behind the injured veteran.

  • World loses three entertainment icons
Deaths come in threes, so they say. Whoever "they" are.
And this week saw the world of entertainment lose icons in Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson, within about 48 hours of each other.
Jackson's story is the most sad.

  • Gov. Nigh once sold parking spaces for OU football games
Gov. George Nigh was back in Norman this past week. He was the featured speaker at a luncheon celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Mr. Nigh, often considered the father of Oklahoma tourism, shared that he once lived in a converted sorority house near the OU campus while he served as lieutenant governor.

  • The summer mosquito war
The city's mosquito fogging operations have begun. It's not like the spraying that Norman promoted 40 years ago. They're after the offspring of the same bugs we battled as kids.
They tend to congregate round creeks and ponds, something we had many of growing up in northeast Norman.

  • VIDEO: Big red wine and bigger red letters put Norman winery on the map
Google satellites thousands of miles above the earth can spot Tom Knott's Redbud Ridge Vineyard and Winery on Norman's east side. It has nothing to do with the grapes or the winepress. It's the 12-foot, bright red "Sooners" lettering along the winery's southern border.

  • Duck for cover -- the Shih Tzu has arrived
My house has been Shih Tzued.
It wasn't a surprise. I knew the Shih Tzu invasion was coming. I've known for several months. Which is a good thing. No one ever wants to wake up and discover that when the weatherman said it's hurricane season he meant one was coming to your house and was going to circle your living room for two weeks.

  • Mom's ten years of persistence pays off in credit card fight
Janne O'Donnell was as giddy as an Irish schoolgirl on the White House lawn on a recent Friday afternoon.
"I just couldn't help it," she said. "This was the happiest day of my life."
She has spent the last 10 years trying to get state and federal legislation that regulated credit card companies and their aggressive marketing to college students, usually with the help of schools that are compensated by the companies.

  • In the grip of la grippe
Many of the troubles we've undergone in recent months have had, if not exactly silver linings, at least a few unexpected compensations. The economic crisis has introduced people to the joys of gardening, made careful budgeting popular and kept people like me from feeling like dinosaurs for not owning the latest new gadget.
