NORMAN — Is anyone surprised that after Anthony Weiner conceded defeat Tuesday in New York City’s Democratic primary for mayor, he gave a reporter the middle finger as he drove away?
One of the first of five candidates to concede, Weiner, the disgraced former congressman, got only 5 percent of the votes. That’s 5 percent too many.
In a string of disgraces, Weiner resigned from Congress in 2011 for sending women lewd online messages and pictures. He got into the mayor’s race in May, only to get caught on camera doing the same thing under a pseudonym, Carlos Danger.
We hope this is the last time this walking punchline declares his candidacy for, well, anything.
In Tuesday’s concession speech, Weiner acknowledged he was an “imperfect messenger.” The message sent by voters was spot on.
So, while our last vision (hopefully) of former Rep. Weiner is that of him flipping the bird, it was the voters who ultimately made the same gesture to him at the ballot box.
