NORMAN

The University of Oklahoma baseball team entered the 2009 NCAA tournament as one of the most productive offenses in the country. They led the Big 12 Conference in runs, hits and average.

But their was one category the Sooners led in that paid even bigger dividends off the field. Their 81 home runs not only led the conference, but also supported a good cause.

Norman’s Power Roofing and Exterior donated $50 for every home run hit by Oklahoma this season to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the name of Mitchell Whitaker.

Mitchell Whitaker was a 10-year old who died of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia Sept. 27, 2007, two years after he was diagnosed with the disease.

In Whitaker’s honor, his mother, Tracy created Mitchell’s Angels.

“This year, OU contacted us with an offer that we couldn't refuse,” Tracy Whitaker stated on her website gomitchgo.com. “ Power Roofing pledged $50 for every homerun would be donated to the OU Baseball charity of choice. OU Baseball selected the Leukemia Lymphoma Society in Mitch's honor. Obviously, 2009 has been a great year with Team Whitaker fundraising and roofing companies. Power Roofing and Heartland Roofing are making a difference in battling this disease.”

Power Roofing handed over a check to the Whitaker family for $4,150 May 15 at L Dale Mitchell Ball park.
