The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — A memorial fund has been set up after a Norman cyclist was killed Saturday while participating in a benefit ride in Bethany.

James “Chance” Toles, 36, was participating in the event, “Spin Your Wheels,” for the Children’s Center in Bethany when he was struck by a truck pulling a boat trailer, police reported.

He was transported to Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City where he died.

An online memorial fund set up for an education fund in his name states Toles was training for Ironman Lake Tahoe when he was hit by the truck.

Bethany Police Lt. Chris Culbreath said Toles was on the last mile and a half of the 100-mile course when the collision took place on 39th Expressway, U.S. Route 66. Bethany police, EMSA and fire department, along with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded to the wreck.

Police reported that the driver who struck Toles is cooperating and the wreck is under investigation.
