Investigation indicates Maisano killed by close range shotgun blast

CHICKASHA — As the investigation continues, details surrounding the shooting death of a 24-year-old Norman woman in Amber have revealed the brutality with which she was killed.

Sara Maisano of Norman was allegedly shot and killed by Steven Thompson late on June 26. Maisano is the daughter of Norman Police Department Deputy Chief Jim Maisano.

Grady County Sheriff Jim Weir would not speculate on exact motives, but said he believed the crime stemmed from a domestic violence situation.

Weir said Thompson walked into his house and for some reason became enraged at the sight of his fiancé Katie Garner and Maisano together.

“According to Garner, he started beating both her and the victim with his hands and the butt of a shotgun,” Weir said.

Garner passed out after sustaining multiple injuries. She awoke a few hours later to find Maisano on her bed, who she thought was sleeping, Weir said.

“She was walking out when Thompson walked into the room, pushed her back and told her (Garner) that he had killed Maisano,” Weir said.

The mortal injury sustained by Maisano was indicative of a close ranged shotgun blast to the head, said Weir.

Garner is currently being treated for multiple injuries at an Oklahoma City hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Thompson was booked into the Grady County Jail and charged with murder in the first degree, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery.

Grady County Sheriff Office deputies responded to reports of a homicide in Amber shortly after noon Thursday.

Public Relations Officer for the Grady County Sheriff’s Office Lisa Hatchett said approximately six deputies responded to the scene.

Despite reports of a love triangle surrounding the possible murder, Hatchett said Weir wants to be very careful confirming any information regarding a motive for this crime.

Spokesperson for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Brian Rizzi said Weir requested the assistance of crime scene agents from OSBI in a homicide investigation on the outskirts of Amber, northeast of Amber-Pocasset High School on County Road 2880.
