Police pursuit leads to arrest

NORMAN — A 53-year-old man was arrested after a short police pursuit Tuesday morning around 8:45 a.m. in northwest Norman.

Joe Keith Anderson was arrested on complaint of feloniously eluding an officer, resisting arrest, driving without a drivers license, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley said no one was hurt during the pursuit, which began near 24th Avenue Northwest and Robinson Street after a routine traffic stop.

A witness said the man roared down Barbour Avenue and it sounded like he was driving on his rims at that point.

“Then I heard the sirens, then here came this parade of black and whites — I lost count after eight — there were unmarked cars, a canine unit, a motorcycle,” the witness said. “I’ve never seen a force like that. It made me appreciate the police force.”

The witness said it was all over in a matter of minutes.

“This all took place, they were through our neighborhood and it was over in 2 minutes, if that. Everything happened just ‘wham, wham, wham,’” the witness said.

The sirens ended shortly after the pursuit traveled through her neighborhood and she said it must have been resolved then, without even a crash.

Then a lot of the police cars traveled back through the area, she said.

“I wonder if they were looking for something that was thrown out,” the witness said.

It was the talk of the neighborhood, as it seemed like something you would just see on TV and you “just see it flashing by,” she said.

“Sometimes you don’t think about the police force,” she said. “It made me grateful for knowing they put their lives on the line ... that makes you think.”
