Man faces charges after police pursuit Tuesday morning

NORMAN — The man who led police on a pursuit Tuesday morning was charged in Cleveland County District Court on Wednesday.

Joel Keith Anderson, 53, of Norman, was charged with endangering others while eluding or attempting to elude police, possession of marijuana, driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol; driving with a canceled, suspended or revoked license; unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and operating a vehicle with an expired or improper tag or decal.

According to the affidavit filed with the charges, an officer tried to make a routine traffic stop due to an expired tag at 24th Avenue Northwest and Robinson Street.

“I activated my emergency lights to stop the vehicle. The vehicle continued and failed to yield. I activated my emergency siren and the vehicle actively attempted to flee,” the affidavit states.

The vehicle then turned south onto Robinson from Woods into a residential neighborhood and continued to flee.

“The vehicle ran numerous stop signs and was traveling at high rates of speed while children and families were present in front yards of homes,” the affidavit states.

Anderson then crashed into a curb but continued directly toward the officer in his vehicle while having an “alternate avenue of escape” and the officer had to perform an evasive maneuver to avoid being hit, the document states.

Anderson stopped in the 1000 block of Barbour Avenue, where he fled on foot. He jumped a fence but was stopped after the officer tased him, according to the affidavit.

During the pursuit, Anderson was seen throwing items out of the window in the neighborhood, and officers later recovered marijuana and a pipe in the roadway.

The officer also noticed that Anderson had an odor of alcoholic beverages on his breath and person. Anderson refused to submit to a test for drunkenness. He was taken to the hospital to be examined and determine whether he was fit for incarceration, the affidavit states.

He was then transported and booked into the Cleveland County jail.

Anderson has previously been convicted of or pled guilty to possession of marijuana and two charges of possession of controlled dangerous substance.
