Three in critical condition after Sunday collision

NORMAN — Three persons transported by EMSStat from the scene of a head-on collision Sunday on State Highway 9 were hospitalized in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, police officials reported.

At approximately 3:43 p.m. Sunday, the Norman Police Department responded to an injury collision in the 8900 block of East Highway 9. A preliminary investigation indicates that a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup was traveling westbound when it traveled left of center.

The truck collided nearly head on with an eastbound Pontiac Grand Prix before colliding into an eastbound Suzuki Grand Villa minivan. An eastbound Chevrolet 1500 pickup was significantly damaged during the collision by debris from the other vehicles.

At this time, it appears weather and road conditions were not a contributing factor in the collision and that the likely cause was impaired driving.

Police said Monday no arrests have been made and charges are pending further investigation and medical outcomes of the victims.

As a result of the collision, several people were injured, including seven people who were transported by EMSStat to local hospitals — three who remained in critical condition Monday.

The remaining four people transported by EMSStat were treated and later released from local hospitals.

The identities of all involved persons are being held pending additional notifications of their families.

Highway 9 was closed for approximately three-and-a-half hours while the collision was investigated and the involved were vehicles removed.

Along with the Norman Police Department, the Norman Fire Department, EMSStat, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation responded to the scene to provide assistance.

The collision remains under investigation by the Norman/OUPD Collision Investigation Reconstruction Team.
