Walls going up at animal welfare center

NORMAN — Construction crews have started to put up blocks for the interior and exterior walls of the new Norman Animal Welfare Center, said Jim Maisano, Norman police deputy chief and project manager.

“They are making progress on getting some of the interior and exterior walls up for Phase 1,” Maisano said Thursday. “We’ve been kind of delayed for the last month or so due to the extreme cold temperatures. Cold temperatures and concrete and mortar don’t mix together well.”

The concrete slab has been poured and everything underneath the slab, such as plumbing, has been completed, he said. Crews started to put up blocks for the inside walls last Tuesday, as well as colored blocks for exterior walls.

In addition, Maisano said the steel for the roof support beams have been delivered, so it will be on hand whenever crews start on that part of the project.

Maisano said they will most likely try to get a 60-day extension. If the extension is passed, it will push completion of the Animal Welfare Center into fall 2015.

“We were looking at the end of July 2015, now it will be maybe September or mid October,” he said.

However, with the slab poured, Maisano said the layout is becoming visible and you can tell where the adoption room and training rooms are going to be.

“It’s really good to see that progress is being made that you can visually see,” he said.

Vaccination clinic set: The Norman Animal Welfare Center and Friends of the Animals of Norman are also hosting a vaccination, microchip and heartworm prevention clinic called “March for Health Event” this weekend.

The event will be held 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 1 at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds.

One-year and three-year rabies shots vaccinations will be available. In order to receive a three-year vaccine, owners must show proof of having a prior one-year rabies vaccination in the form of a rabies tag or certificate.
