1 injured in Norman house fire; damages estimated at $15K

NORMAN — As Norman firefighters extinguished a house fire Wednesday, one woman was taken away on a stretcher.

The fire was called in shortly before noon at 604 Nebraska St. Fire and smoke was visible when crews arrived on scene. Several neighbors in the area said they believe the woman had either smoke inhalation and possibly a few burns from the small blaze.

“There was one person in the house, but she made it out. She’s OK; it looked like she just had a few burns,” neighbor Mike Richardson said.

Norman Deputy Fire Chief Jim Bailey said one woman was transported by EMSStat to Norman Regional Hospital with second-degree burns, most likely on her arms.

A neighbor across the street, Greg Muse, said he could see the flames coming out of the bedroom window when firefighters arrived.

Bailey said it took firefighters about 10 minutes to extinguish the fire, which was contained to the bedroom and part of the hallway.

After crews extinguished the fire, they began to pull charred items out through the window, trying to salvage what items they could. Several slightly burned pictures were handed over to either family or friends, who also took some personal items and a cat out of the house.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Preliminary damage estimates are about $10,000 to the structure and $5,000 to contents, Bailey said.

“Today isn’t a good day for a fire,” Richardson said, remarking on the cold weather. “No day is a good day for a fire, but today isn’t a good day.”

Temperatures were around 16 degrees in Norman, with wind chills making it feel even colder.
