NORMAN — The suspect of a police pursuit out of Oklahoma City reportedly shot himself in the head after the pursuit ended with a wreck in west Norman around noon Tuesday, police said.

Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley said the wreck occurred near 24th Avenue Southwest and Main Street after Oklahoma City police pursued a southbound suspect vehicle on Interstate 35. Eyewitnesses on the scene reported that the suspect wrecked after he ran over a law enforcement spike strip.

Oklahoma City Police Capt. Dexter Nelson confirmed that the suspect collided with another vehicle at 24th Avenue Northwest and Main Street before his vehicle came to a rest at the intersection. The suspect’s vehicle rested near the Circle K gas station in the area.

Nelson said he is unaware of a spike strip being used during the pursuit. The two people in the other vehicle involved in the collision received treatment for minor injuries, he said.

When the suspect got out of the vehicle, he told police to back off or he was going to shoot himself, which he then did, witnesses said. Police confirmed his death.

Nelson said police are still investigating whether the suspect shot himself on foot or before the car came to a rest.

The pursuit began in Oklahoma City around 11:41 a.m. in the area of SE 44th Street and High Avenue. Officers had been looking for him in response to previous calls including a domestic strangulation incident Monday, Nelson said.

The suspect also had several warrants. Nelson said Oklahoma City officers were very familiar with the man.

The pursuit then continued southbound on I-35 until he got off on Robinson Street and went southbound on a service road until he got to Main Street, where he went eastbound and collided with the another vehicle, Nelson said.

Oklahoma City Police Department and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol were involved in the pursuit.

Police are withholding the suspect’s name pending identity confirmation and next of kin notification.
