One injured after vehicle hits rickshaw

NORMAN — Norman police cited a woman early Sunday morning after she allegedly hit a rickshaw bike transporting two people, sending one to the hospital.

The incident occurred just after midnight Sunday, on North Berry Road and Salisbury Street after the University of Oklahoma football game against Texas Christian University.

The woman, 23, told police she had looked down, possibly to adjust the radio. When she looked up, it was too late and she hit the rickshaw bike from behind, Norman police Capt. Tom Easley said.

One of the rickshaw bike’s passengers sustained injuries to his head and lacerations to his left side near his back and leg, Easley said. He was transported to Norman Regional Hospital’s emergency room, where he was treated.

The other passenger saw the headlights from the vehicle and jumped out of the rickshaw before the vehicle hit them, Easley said. The driver of the rickshaw was not injured.

The woman was cited for failure to devote full time and attention to driving, he said.

Large events, such as the OU football game, generally increase vehicle and pedestrian traffic, slowing traffic to a crawl, which typically helps prevent incidents like this, Easley said.

While the incident occurred at midnight, Easley said drivers, riders and pedestrians should always pay attention if they’re on a public roadway.

“Obviously, somebody was not paying attention to the road in this case,” he said.

As far as any lighting or reflector requirements for the rickshaws go, Easley said any bicycle, or in this case tricycle, operating at night must have illumination to the front and the rear, just like an automobile.

“(Bicycles) have to obey the same laws as cars do,” he said. “Whether it’s a bicycle, tricycle or automobile, if you’re doing so on a public street, do your riding and driving with due care.”

That includes stopping at stop signs, obeying traffic signals and signaling for turns.
