Two plead guilty in murder

NORMAN — Earlier this week, a man charged with first-degree murder waived his Monday jury trial and pleaded guilty to the murder charge and four other counts.

Court records show Gilbert Paz, 38, of Weatherford, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, shooting with intent to kill, conspiracy and attempted robbery in concert with Stacy Buckmaster and Kurtis Southerland, as well as possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction.

“On Sept. 9, 2012 ... I, Gilbert Paz, participated in a plan, along with Buckmaster and Southerland to rob a person. There were shots fired at one individual and another died as a result of the robbery,” part of the summary of facts filed with the plea states.

Buckmaster, 26, of Weatherford, also pleaded guilty. She was charged with first-degree murder, shooting with intent, robbery with a weapon and conspiracy.

Records show a motion to quash was filed April 4 for Southerland, 28, of Thomas. The motion states sufficient evidence was not adduced at the preliminary hearing to establish that a crime had been committed.

Buckmaster, Paz and Southerland went to an Oklahoma City residence in Cleveland County in September 2012 after Buckmaster told the two men she believed the home would be easy to rob because of the lack of surveillance cameras and firearms, according to affidavits. She had previously been to the home to purchase narcotics several times and had seen several thousand dollars inside the trailer.

Paz and Southerland drove to a Walmart to purchase gloves and ski masks or bandanas for the robbery, and Buckmaster showed the men the location, the affidavit said.

Buckmaster waited in the vehicle as the two men went to the trailer on foot. After some time, Buckmaster heard five to six gunshots and Paz and Southerland ran back to the car, the document states.

“Afterward, Southerland told Buckmaster he was met at the trailer door by a man carrying a shotgun, whereupon Southerland fired several rounds inside the trailer. Southerland did not know if he hit or killed anyone,” the affidavit said.
