Two suspects arrested in connection with Stoops burglary case

NORMAN — A suspect arrested Saturday by Norman Police believed to be connected with the burglary at the home of University of Oklahoma football coach, Bob Stoops was booked into Cleveland County Detention Center.

Corey Jamal McCarty, 21, and a juvenile are in custody in connection with the case. McCarty is suspected of motor vehicle theft, use of a stolen credit card, burglary 1 and concealing stolen property.

On the morning of June 19, police responded to a report of a burglary at 5400 NW 36th Ave. The family believed that unkown persons had entered the home while they slept and stole cash, a phone, credit cards, and keys as well as taking an SUV parked in front of the residence, using the stolen keys.

Video surveillance at the property recorded two young males allegedly committing the crime. Additional video evidence from area businesses show the same suspects attempting to use the victim’s credit cards.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Norman Detective Corey Lambrecht received a call from Oklahoma City police that

McCarty was detained when OCPD were breaking up a party. A source reported that McCarty and a friend talked about the Stoops burglary. McCarty also matched one of the images in the video.

McCarty, after receiving his Miranda rights, was “polite and cooperative” according to the affidavit. He confessed to entering the victim’s home and taking the property and vehicle.

McCarty was reportedly apologetic, saying he meant no harm to the victim’s family and that the burglary was “not his idea.”

Other suspects are believed to be involved and police are still investigating the case.
