Preliminary murder trial set for Steven Thompson, accused of assaulting his fiance and killing the daughter of a Norman deputy police chief

NORMAN — The preliminary trial for a man accused of assaulting his fiancé and killing the daughter of a Norman deputy police chief has been set for Dec. 18.

A preliminary conference set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday was preceded by Steven Thompson’s defense attorney, Irven Box, setting the date earlier that morning for the case to be heard in Judge Timothy A. Brauer’s courtroom in Grady County District Court.

Thompson faces charges of first-degree murder stemming from an incident on June 26 in which Sara Maisano was reportedly killed with a single shotgun blast to the head at a residence in Amber. In addition, Thompson is charged with assaulting his fiancé, Katie Garner, during the same incident. Maisano is the daughter of Norman Deputy Police Chief Jim Maisano.

Representing the prosecution is Assistant District Attorney Courtnie Siess.

Both defense and prosecution will use the time to build the case for and against Thompson, who remains in Grady County Jail after he was denied bail upon arrest due to the severity of the charges.

According to information gathered by the Grady County Sheriff’s Office, Thompson reportedly walked into his house that night and became enraged at the sight of his fiancé, Garner, and Maisano together.

Thompson allegedly began beating the women with both his hands and the butt of a shotgun, Grady County Sheriff Jim Weir said.

This caused Garner to pass out after sustaining multiple injuries. When she awoke a few hours later, she saw Maisano on her bed and thought she was sleeping, court records show.

“She (Garner) was walking out when Thompson walked into the room, pushed her back and told her that he had killed Maisano,” Weir said.

The mortal injury sustained by Maisano was indicative of a close range shotgun blast to the head, records show.
