Police, volunteers help Norman prepare for influx of college students

NORMAN — More than a dozen officers and several community volunteers walked around parts of Norman on Saturday to get neighborhoods ready for the influx of college students moving back for school.

Fifteen officers walked with the volunteers in the area of Berry Road, east to University Boulevard and Symmes Street and south to Hardin Drive. They delivered door hangers with information about being a good neighbor, starting a neighborhood watch, how to report issues to code compliance and other information.

Norman police said with college students moving back in, they tend to experience an increase in calls for service concerning parking and large gatherings.

Police hope that providing the information will encourage people to be good neighbors as well as empower neighbors to call the Norman Police Department when they need help finding a solution to problems.

Two officers also spent the day with more than 1,000 people as part of a large back-to-school event coordinated by Alameda Church of Christ. The Norman Police Department was invited to provide child identification pamphlets for families attending.

With the assistance of volunteers from the church, more than 250 children were fingerprinted and photographed. The pamphlets were provided to the families.

If something were to happen to a child, law enforcement would need a current photo of the child. The police department provided that to families on Saturday.

The weekend activities were part of the department’s ongoing efforts to increase their presence in the community.
