Shots fired in central Norman

NORMAN — Norman police responded to shots fired near Boyd Street and Flood Avenue around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Lt. Jay Callaghan said the suspect’s vehicle was a black Dodge Durango pickup truck. The vehicle was last seen traveling south on Flood Avenue.

Capt. Tom Easley, police spokesman, said there have been no reports of injuries and no shooting victims.

A homeowner at 621 S. Flood Ave. had placed a a microphone online for sale and someone had visited the residence to look at it, Easley said. The person, who was a male, asked the homeowner if he could take it out and show it to his girlfriend in the car, which the homeowner agreed to, he said.

The homeowner apparently became suspicious, went outside with a pistol and shot at the male as he began to drive away, with a passenger, in the black Dodge Durango. Easley said the homeowner fired at least twice.

“We detained the homeowner and are proceeding with the investigation,” Easley said. “The original theft suspects are still at large.”

As of early Wednesday evening, no arrests had been made. Detectives will continue to investigate the matter, Easley said.

A neighbor in the area said she heard two loud noises around 5 p.m.

“I thought, ‘My god, could that have been gun shots?’” she said.

About that time, a mother who was picking up her children at the Firehouse Art Center near the neighborhood asked the neighbor if she had called the police. The neighbor said the mother saw a man come out of the house, shoot at a vehicle and then get into his vehicle to chase after the man.

The neighbor said the mother also stopped police to talk to them about the incident.

The area where the incident took place was less than half a block away from McKinley Elementary School and less than two-and-a-half blocks away from Lions Park, where children were practicing soccer at the time of the shooting.
