Residents, businesses start repairs from storm

NORMAN — Business and residents are continuing to make arrangements for repairs and cleaning up after a hail storm hit southwest Norman early Sunday morning.

Charleston Apartments, located near 24th Avenue Southwest on Lindsey Street, reported a total of 90 windows broken out. The hailstorm, which hit around 4 a.m. Sunday, woke some tenants up and not only damaged their windows but also their cars.

“I thought it was the end of the world,” Charleston tenant Lesley Johnson said. “I thought the roof was going to come in on us.”

Johnson said their room got pretty wet and the back windshield of their car was busted out by hailstones.

Charleston Apartments is owned by Dowell Properties. Owner Fred Dowell said workers boarded up apartment windows all day Sunday and a glass company from Oklahoma City measured glass. Workers also cleaned wet areas inside of units that were affected, he said.

“The nature of the hailstorm seemed to just hit the apartment complex head on,” Dowell said.

Cars also were lined up for repairs Monday at David Stanley Chevrolet in Norman after a hailstorm damaged around 900 vehicles early Sunday morning.

General Manager Todd Ritz said appraisals for the vehicle damages will start today.

“We had about 900 cars (affected) and over 300 of them had broken glass,” Ritz said.

There have also been a significant amount of calls coming in from customers to get repairs, and Ritz said he expects that to continue throughout the week.

“Obviously we’re going to have significant discounts because of this,” he said.

The hail hit the southwest part of Norman the hardest, near the area where an April tornado hit the city last year.

The National Weather Service said Sunday that the largest hailstone reported was 2 inches in diameter, which fell around 24th Avenue Southwest and Brooks Street.

Forecasters said the area is not expected to have any severe storms for the rest of the week, but it will be cloudy, gloomy and wet.
