NORMAN — A Norman woman was pronounced dead following an apparent suicide at the Cleveland County Detention Center early Wednesday, sheriff’s officials said.

Undersheriff Rhett Burnett said it appeared the woman, later identified as Amy Lynn Covington, 36, took her own life.

According to Meghan McCormick, Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office public information officer, Covington was booked into the facility at 1 a.m. Wednesday by Norman police on a public intoxication complaint.

She was alone in a cell when jailers found her and summoned an ambulance.

“She was discovered hanging in her cell at 3:38 a.m. As soon as she was discovered, detention officers took extraordinary efforts to revive her. Emergency crews were notified and detention crews continued resuscitation efforts,” McCormick said. “Emergency crews took over resuscitation attempts and transported her to Norman Regional Hospital where, a short time later, she was pronounced dead.”

It is the first death at the detention center at Franklin Road and U.S. Highway 77. The facility opened in February 2012.

An investigation into the incident continues.
