NORMAN — A Norman woman was charged with embezzlement Wednesday in Cleveland County District Court.

Monica Renae Helberg, 35, of Norman, was charged for allegedly embezzling around $10,500 from Children’s Place, 3357 W. Main St. Helberg was the store manager at the time she allegedly embezzled the money, according to the affidavit.

During an interview at the Norman Police Department, Helberg said she took two end-of-day deposit bags from Dec. 21 and 22 in 2012. The bags contained more than $10,000, which was a mixture of cash and customer’s checks, the affidavit stated.

Helberg only used the cash from the deposits and destroyed the checks by shredding them, she told police in the interview.

“The defendant (Helberg) stated that she had taken the deposit to ‘pay back’ other end-of-day deposits that she had ‘borrowed’ money from for personal expenses,” the affidavit stated.

The document listed personal expenses as a car payment, trips to see friends, dining out and other things.
