NORMAN — Firefighters responded to a large brush fire around 4:45 p.m. Sunday in Noble.

The fire blazed in the area of 48th Avenue Southeast and Grand Avenue, north of Maguire Road, burning around an acre or acre-and-a-half of brush, Noble Fire Chief Gary Bonner said.

No structures were burned and no injuries were reported.

“We stopped it before it got into the neighborhood,” Bonner said.

According to first responders, the fire also came within 100 feet of a church on 48th Avenue Southeast. Noble and Slaughterville firefighters were on the scene and northbound traffic on 48th Avenue Southeast from Maguire Road was stopped while crews battled the brush fire.

About 20 firefighters and 10 fire trucks responded to the blaze and had it fully contained within an hour, Bonner said. Hot spots still were being put out several hours after the fire was contained.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
