Jury trial set for former OU professor

NORMAN — A jury trial for former OU social work professor Dwain Pellebon is set to begin Monday morning in Cleveland County District Court.

Pellebon, 56, of Norman was charged in 2011 with sexually abusing children. A jury trial is set for 9 a.m. Monday at the Cleveland County Courthouse with District Judge Tracy Schumacher presiding.

Oklahoma State Courts Network records show Pellebon’s jury trial has been pushed back three times this year — in March, April and June. Records show in April and June the trial was stricken due to other pending trials for manslaughter.

Original charges were amended during a June 22 preliminary hearing last year to three counts of child sexual abuse and six counts of lewd or indecent proposals to children under 16. During the preliminary hearing, six female witnesses from ages 9 to 21 testified against Pellebon.

At Pellebon’s district court arraignment in July 2012, he pled not guilty.

In May, a list of people subpoenaed for the June trial included eight victims. Three of Pellebon’s family members were subpoenaed, as well as OU’s School of Social Work academic director Donald Baker.

Pellebon was a social work professor at the university. He resigned from his position in December 2011, shortly after he was charged with the felonies.

Several police officers and child care workers also were subpoenaed in May for the June trial. The witness and exhibit list was amended several times in October, records show.

Prosecuting lawyers handling the case are assistant district attorneys Lori Puckett and Susan Caswell.
