Hume declared danger to public

NORMAN — A Cleveland County man who was found not guilty by reason of insanity on charges for shooting and killing his mother in 2012 is now in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health.

Defendant Gerald Hume was acquitted of all four accused counts by District Judge Lori Walkley. The counts include murder in the first degree, two counts of feloniously pointing a firearm and desecration of a body.

Assistant District Attorney Lori Puckett said Friday morning’s session determined the placement for Hume, who was declared a danger to the public.

In November 2012, Hume was arrested after an 11-hour standoff with police. His mother, Janet Hume, had been reported as missing for a week before police obtained a search warrant for Hume’s house at 11000 S. Bryant in Oklahoma City after Gerald Hume became a suspect in his mother’s disappearance.

Suspicions were raised when Hume told police his mother was on a trip, despite her car being parked in his driveway. During negotiations with police, Humse said he shot his mother in the chest, according to court documents.

After an 11-hour negotiation with Hume, police entered the home, where they later found his mother’s body.

Hume is in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health for an indeterminate amount of time. Puckett said Hume’s mental illness needs require inpatient treatment, which he will receive while in custody.
