NORMAN — Oklahoma Highway Patrol identified Sunday’s drowning victim at Lake Thunderbird in the Post Oak Cove area.
Michael Lewis Thomas, 26, of Newalla, was swimming across the cove Sunday when he began to struggle. Thomas went under the water and never resurfaced, according to the OHP report.
His older brother, James Lonie Thomas, 29, also of Newalla, then swam out to assist. James then began struggling and was removed from the water by a passerby, the report said.
The initial report of the drowning was received at 3:35 p.m. Sunday at 15000 E. Rock Creek Road and Michael was recovered around 5:35 p.m. He was located about 100 yards from the shoreline in 14 feet of water, the report said.
While James was attempting to assist his younger brother, he overexerted himself and was transported by EMSStat to Norman Regional Hospital. NRH spokesperson Kelly Wells said Monday that James was treated and released Sunday.
