NORMAN — A Mississippi man charged in a 1982 Norman rape case is now in police custody, police confirmed Wednesday.
Gilbert Duane Harris was arrested Monday and taken to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center in Biloxi, Miss.
Harris, 58, is not eligible for bond, as he is on hold for Oklahoma, said Lt. Christopher De Back of the Biloxi Police Department. Harris was charged as a suspect in a 32-year-old rape case by the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office.
Another man was wrongfully convicted in the case and spent more than 13 years in prison. DNA evidence exonerated the wrongfully convicted man.
An affidavit attached to the charge alleges that the assault occurred in an apartment in the 1100 block of Biloxi Drive, east of the OU campus.
Harris was formally charged Friday with first-degree rape and forcible sodomy. He awaits an extradition hearing before he can be transferred to Oklahoma. De Back said normally after an extradition hearing, the state has 10 days to pick up the suspect.
