NORMAN — The Norman Police Department is asking all motorists to make wearing a seat belt a priority.

The department also emphasizes that drivers should consider the ages of children riding in a vehicle.

Oklahoma law requires children from birth to age 12 to be in an appropriate car seat or restraint system, and specific guidelines apply to children, depending on their size and weight.

Anyone with questions about age-appropriate car seats can visit the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office website or call the Norman Police Department, Office of Community Relations, at 366-5267.

A certified car seat installer can answer any questions and schedule an appointment to make certain a car seat is installed properly.

The Norman Police Department utilizes a grant from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office for the enforcement of seatbelt laws.

Officers also work various traffic projects throughout the year specifically directed toward seatbelt enforcement.

Police said they encourage all citizens to buckle up; doing so may save you from injury, death or the financial cost of a citation.
