NORMAN — Programs developed by a local Norman police officer to help empower women and educate men have been taken across the country this week to benefit individuals in Alaska.

Sgt. Bob Moore was a driving force in developing “My Body, My Life: Empowering Women Through Awareness, Education, Violence Prevention and Self-defense Techniques” about 20 years ago. He also helped develop a counterpart program, “REAL Men,” to empower men through education and understanding in issues dealing with violence against women.

Today, he is training individuals with the Alaska Department of Public Safety for both programs. Moore is joined by his wife, who is also one of the program’s developers, to help teach the instructor school.

Training began Monday and will end Thursday at the Anchorage Police Department Training Center.

“We will train 24 instructors on the use and presentation of those programs for the myriad of populations across Alaska in the coming year,” Moore said. “We are so very honored and excited about this invitation and the prospect of our programs growing beyond the borders of Norman and even Oklahoma to help both women and men to address violence in appropriate and responsible ways.”

Next week, Moore will travel to Vance Air Force Base with a co-developer of the program, Master Police Officer Mark Savage, to certify 24 instructors on the women’s program.

Moore said the Vance Air Force Base has had four instructors teaching the program for the past two years, but due to military transfers, they are leaving for other assignments.

“We hope they take the program with them to help others throughout the world, as well,” Moore said. “The wing commander for this base requested that we train additional instructors to allow them to continue to present this program and expand its positive impact upon the military, dependents and local area.”

The women’s program is offered regularly in Norman. For more information, visit mybodymylife.net.
