NORMAN — Leaving scene of a wreck

A man was charged Wednesday with leaving the scene of an accident involving injury after he allegedly struck a pedestrian with his vehicle near Southwest 104th Street and Kingsgate Drive in Oklahoma City in Cleveland County and drove away.

Terrence Lamont Jones, 23, of Oklahoma City, was driving a 2012 Nissan Altima on March 31 when he collided with and struck a pedestrian, causing several injuries to her, the felony information shows.

A witness followed the suspect after seeing the Nissan hit the woman and drive away. The witness said he saw a subject lean his head out of the driver’s window, so he got a good description of him, according to the affidavit filed with the charge.

The witness lost the suspect’s vehicle in the area of Southwest 93rd Street and South Pennsylvania Avenue, but the car later arrived at the scene being driven by a female claiming she was driving at the time of the accident, the affidavit said. She later informed officers it was really her son who was driving the vehicle.

Jones returned to the scene in a different vehicle driven by someone else, and officers took Jones into custody. The witness positively identified Jones as the person he saw driving the car, the affidavit said.

Jones later made a spontaneous statement in the back seat of the patrol car, stating, “I couldn’t see that girl,” and said the sun was in his eyes, the document states. He also informed officers he left because he was scared and wanted to get his mother because she was a nurse and he thought she could help the victim.

Jones has previously been convicted of felonious possession of a firearm and false declaration of ownership in a pawn in 2011.
