Woman convicted of murder receives suspended sentence

NORMAN — A woman who was part of a trio that attempted to burglarize an Oklahoma City home, shooting and killing a man in the process, was formally sentenced Wednesday in Cleveland County District Court.

Stacy Lafern Buckmaster, 26, of Weatherford, was convicted of first-degree murder, shooting with intent to kill, conspiracy and robbery with a weapon. Buckmaster received a 23-year suspended sentence for life in prison under the conditions of continued cooperation and truthful testimony when requested, records show.

Failure to comply with the two conditions may result in revocation of the suspended portion of the sentence, the document states.

Buckmaster and two others, Kurtis Blake Southerland, 28, of Thomas, and Gilbert Paz, 38 of Weatherford, went to the Oklahoma City residence in Cleveland County in September 2012 to rob it. She told the two men she believed it would be an easy target because of the lack of surveillance cameras and firearms, according to affidavits.

Buckmaster told police she had previously been to the home to purchase narcotics several times and had seen several thousand dollars inside the trailer. While Paz and Southerland went to burglarize the home, Buckmaster waited in a vehicle nearby, the affidavit said.

Shots were fired and Southerland told Buckmaster the two were met by a man carrying a shotgun, so Southerland fired several rounds inside, the document states. The three later learned that Jonathan Patton died as a result of the shooting at 12900 Kerns Road.

Paz pleaded guilty to all four counts, as well as possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction, earlier this month.

Paz’s plea agreement included a life sentence for the four counts he shared with Buckmaster and Southerland. The fifth count, possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction, included 38 years in a Department of Corrections facility with the last eight years suspended, unless lowered at the request of the state at sentencing.
